Is Jonathan Demme’s Stop Making Sense the greatest concert film in cinema history? It’s certainly in very good company, The Last Waltz and Woodstock spring to mind.

What sets the Talking Heads movie apart is the sheer Talking Head-ness of it all, and the gonzo marriage of band and film-maker. Beginning on an empty stage with only David Byrne and a boombox, the piece builds and builds, with each band member joining Byrne one at a time, until it explodes in ecstatic, relentless, and bonkers reverie.

Stop Making Sense always had the magical and hypnotic power to make audiences feel like they were actually there, at the concert in real time, and its almost impossible not to lose yourself in the moment, and get up and dance.
