Read to the Green Sheep
A children's Reading Project, for 0-12yrs olds
In-store at Red Kangaroo Books
Mon 18th May - Sun 24th May or until stocks last
Last year Red Kangaroo Books was awarded a Penguin Children’s Booksellers Grant. The grant responds to a growing challenge: children are reading less, with only 29% of young people reading for pleasure. Books now compete with screens and constant digital distraction, making it harder for children to discover the joy of reading. We want to help change this!
We thought it would be wonderful to engage our green sheep plush toy in this project. The green sheep holds a special place in our hearts. Lots of people, young and old, spend time talking to and hugging our green sheep (from Where Is the Green Sheep? illustrated by Judy Horacek, written by Mem Fox).
Thanks to the generosity of Penguin Random House we are inviting young people (ages 0-12) to come into the shop and choose a book from a specially curated selection then to read it to the sheep, the book is then the reader's to keep. For those not yet reading independently, a grown-up can share the story aloud and for those young ones who can read and would like to sit quietly and read in silence in the company of the sheep that's OK too. We have 60 books to give away.
This initiative is about making reading fun, welcoming, and part of everyday life. Reading aloud to children plays a vital role, building language, imagination, and connection.
Running from Monday 18th May until Sunday 24th May, or until books run out.
In-store only, drop in, choose a book from the Penguin selection, and spend some time reading to the green sheep. No bookings, walk-ins only - until stocks last.
